When the topic of preventive care is brought up to clients, vets are likely to receive “I don’t have the money for that” as a response. This is a valid reason to not opt for preventive care. But the underlying implication of this common reply is that clients do not see the worth of routine check-ups. Know how to initiate the conversation.

Make their pet’s wellness an ongoing discussion. Habitually ask about the pets’ behavior and surroundings before and during visits. Suggest the services that would fit the pet’s lifestyle. Additionally, have preventive care materials available for browsing. Avoid discussing it at the end of the visit. It would give off the impression that preventive care is just an opportunity to upcharge.

Talk about the tests that the pet needs immediately and the ones that could be postponed. Effectively educate your client by appropriating your message to their pet’s specific circumstance. It’s not enough to say “Outdoor cats must have all their vaccines.” Consider saying “Because your cat spends a lot of time outdoors, he is at high risk of coming in contact with unknown wildlife. Let’s talk about how we could protect him from these risks.”

Moreover, you could also highlight which diagnostics could be prioritized more. For example, a young outdoor dog without heartworm prevention would probably need a fecal exam more than a CBC. An indoor adult cat with no gastrointestinal complications, on the other hand, would require CBC more. Always emphasize how your preventive care services could aid their pet specifically. In the veterinary practice, compromised samples are common ground. With our animal patients usually exhibiting fussy and volatile behavior during blood-drawing, the act of retrieving samples is a challenge in and of itself. Vets are usually compelled to make do with the samples that they managed to collect, regardless of the quality. It is estimated that 3 out of 4 veterinary samples retrieved by vets are actually compromised with lipemia, hemolysis, or icterus.

Despite it being a usual part of our diagnostics experience, the negative impact of compromised samples on test results are definitely significant. That is why reference and academic laboratories go to great lengths to minimize their presence. Most in-house chemistry analyzers, however, rarely take these compromised samples into account.

The sample is applied to the top spreading layer to assure even distribution. Before the specimen reaches the reagent layer, a filtering layer removes most interfering substances like lipids, bilirubin, and hemoglobin. Results are then optically measured from below after the reaction products reach the indicator layer. By filtering out the unnecessary debris which could alter test results, these slides aids veterinarians in minimizing the need to redraw blood or rerun tests.
